*This is a short story. Novel SummaryLily is an extraordinary woman who finds herself fighting to right the wrongs of the world. She has never been confident in herself and blames herself for the tragic end that her brother met many years back. As a result, she aspires to have the perfect relationship with her husband Ed and lead a life as a lawyer who fights to keep innocent people out of jail. However, nothing in life ever works out as planned, which becomes increasingly clear for Lily. Ed seems to be hung up on a past girlfriend and Lily questions whether he married her for love or for inheritance. After winning an essential case, Lily finds herself seeking comfort from the one man she ought to stay as far away from as possible. When everything is finally falling to pieces and Lily is ready to embrace her broken life, she finally finds herself on a path that may lead to happiness. But what about the girl next door? Given she is a child who Lily and Ed take care of from time to time, but she is no innocent child--nor is her mom. It is their misdeeds that Lily tries to rectify as is her way, causing mother and daughter to move back to Italy and leave their life in England behind. Bliss is not awaiting any of these characters around the corner, though. It is only moments, or years rather, until their lives are all intertwined once more for better or for worse. ReviewI had initially purchased this book because I am an avid reader of all books thrilling, especially regarding tales about husband and wives (refer to previous blogs). However, I lost track of the book until my sister was reading her own copy at the beach over the Summer. She told me it was really good and asked me to read it so that we could talk about it. Now, what will she say now that I have finished it? "Wasn't it good?".... And I will explode into detail... the detail that I will also share on this blog.
Honestly, I was charmed from the very beginning. I found Lily to be quite likeable and felt sorry that she was never first place in anyone's heart, or so it seemed. I was rooting for her and wanted to see her and Ed's marriage succeed. Not only that, but I grew to care about her clients and the endearing details that Corry includes to make the story feel more personable and real to the reader. I even felt for the little Italian girl next door, Carla. I wanted everyone to live happily ever after and felt it all slip away as the story progressed. As the characters learn to roll with the punches, I felt myself able to do as well. I wanted to see change and progress for the characters, which definitely takes place after the first part. Their lives are different and harder than you would expect, but it gives a new appreciation for the characters and makes their struggles seem logical. I could see where the story was starting to go when Carla returned, but I did not know the full extent. Honestly, this is one of the most page-turning novels that I have read in a LONG time. I breezed through the last 100 pages and had to write about it immediately so that I could just let my thoughts out. This story is so fulfilling and satisfying because it ties every string together, even pieces you didn't know were loose to begin with. I don't feel as though there could have been a more fitting end for any of the characters and my only regret is that I have read their story as it came to a close. There is no more to read, but I wouldn't want to learn more. I think that this is a story that I will reread at some point because it is mysterious, suspenseful, artistic, and in some ways, a feel-good story by the end. I will wait to read it again until I have read my other Fall books and checked out Corry's other novel, Blood Sisters.
